Casino Inspired Fashion From Chanel at the Monte Carlo Cruise Show

From casino-themed movies to casino-inspired cocktails, accessories, decorations, and entire parties, you've probably seen and heard them all. Few things escaped the fine imprint of the casino theme over the decades. Ever since these iconic venues filled with glamorous decor were embedded into society, they have turned the casino culture into a solid source of inspiration for arts and fashion.

Given this background, would the news of an entire casino-themed haute couture fashion show take you by surprise in 2023? If you've been in the industry for at least half the time that we have, your answer is most likely “no”. However, when we learned about Chanel's latest casino-inspired fashion show in Monte Carlo, we wanted to know more. We did our homework and we're ready to share all the juicy details with you.

Chanel's Casino-Themed Show Opened the Ball

Chanel's Monte Carlo show marked its big comeback to the Riviera, a place that Karl Lagerfeld fell in love with a few years ago and also the place that many consider the pillar of the luxury fashion house. The big return of the Chanel Cruise 2022 Collection on May 5 also marked Chanel's first fashion show outside France since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. To say all eyes were on it would be an understatement.

Needless to say, Chanel gathered quite a number of remarkable guests, including actress Kristen Stewart who flew in from Los Angeles, and rapper G-Dragon who visited from Seoul. The show was also attended by Princess Caroline of Monaco who decided to drop by from her villa with a view of the ocean. The fashion house wanted to make sure that the focus would also be put on the people who were not present at the event in flesh and bones just as much as it would be out thrown on the privileged guests that were there. Chanel explained that, by putting on a beautiful show, they are actually nourishing the imaginary idea of the brand itself while displaying it on all social media channels and reaching out to bigger audiences.

The show was designed in such a way as to bring homage to the world of casinos and racing. While we were already familiar with Chanel's affinity for casino culture that inspired its Casino Bag Collection released for the spring/summer of 2016 or the Casino Luxe Fall 2015 Couture collection, we were eager to see what the 67 supermodels on Monte Carlo's beachfront would be wearing on the catwalk. Our expectations were high and, needless to say, we did not feel disappointed at all. The fashion house brought its light-hearted tribute to the glitz that defines Grand Prix races and casinos. The models wore playful jumpsuits that racing drivers usually wear – only their tweeds were coloured in beautiful pastels and gold lamé, while their helmets were emblazoned with the Chanel sign.

Pokie Machine and Roulette Themed Bags

The gorgeous pokie machine and roulette-inspired casino clutches and micro bags, the layered chains with small card symbols on them, and the trompe-l'oeil card holder inspired by the red Ace of Hearts were just a few of the casino-themed items that drew all eyes to them. The catwalk dress code was also completed by other pitstop glamour elements, including fingerless gloves, baseball caps, or black-and-white sweaters inspired by a game of checkers.

The Cruise collections were unveiled in May but will not be available for sale until November. This should give you plenty of time to keep spinning those pokie reels in hopes of a big enough win to help you afford one of those tiny pokie machine clutches. The collections were initially dedicated to the elite in need of a wardrobe for hot weather, however, they rapidly turned the heads of many people searching for outfits for their summer holiday. Of course, the cruise season was not selected randomly. Lots of people will finally get to pack their suitcases once again for the first time in the last three years. Accordingly, the season is expected to be one of the most profitable of them all.
